Sister and brother Jessica and Oliver Chance named the road after Saint Crewenna, who travelled from Ireland to Cornwall in the fifth century. Pupils also put artefacts in a time capsule that will be buried next to their school to celebrate the new homes.
Ocean Development Manager, Anthony Bassett, spoke to all the pupils at their end of term assembly and presented prizes to the winners of the naming competition. “We are very grateful that Crowan School has so wholeheartedly engaged in both these projects. The pupils have researched their community’s history to find a suitable name for the road and worked hard to provide information and artefacts for the time capsule. This will be unearthed in 2110 and will give the children of the future a snapshot of what life was like.”
Mr Paul Hunkin, head teacher at Crowan Primary School, said the pupils really enjoyed getting involved: “We held a competition for naming the site and received some very interesting entries. It was quite difficult to choose a winner, but the children voted for Crewenna because of the historic connection. The pupils were also very enthusiastic about finding items for the time capsule and stepped up to the challenge of selecting artefact that reflects their daily lives.”
Items collected for the time capsule included a folder compiled by the pupils, showing what children of their age like to do, from their favourite cartoons and pop stars to what animals they like to see at the zoo. The capsule also holds the bicentenary edition of the West Briton, the school prospectus and newsletter, as well as CDs and a mobile phone.
The new housing scheme provides eight homes for affordable rent and four for shared ownership. The scheme was made possible through a partnership between Ocean Housing, the Homes & Communities Agency that provided £ 480,000 in social housing grant and Cornwall Council that contributed £ 100,000. All the homes benefit from high standards of insulation and renewable green heating systems, helping to reduce energy bills for the residents.
