The site now provides 20 homes for affordable rent and 20 homes for shared ownership in a village that had an acute housing shortage. The scheme was a partnership between Ocean Housing Limited, the Housing Corporation and Penwith District Council.
David Renwick, Chief Executive of Ocean Group, said the new development is a significant contribution to the village: “This is a fantastic site right in the centre of the village. The location is important because it is not about the homes we build, but about the people who live in them, who are the important part of the local community. Children like the ones here today, are the community’s future, and it is vital that they can grow up in good quality, attractive and sustainable houses that they are proud to call home.”
Connor Downs Primary School held a competition to provide names for the site and the two winners were Sam Friggins, aged 9, for Trevarthen Close and teaching assistant, Mrs Sims, for Lamorna Close.
Mr Allan Lawrence, Head Teacher at Connor Downs Primary School was pleased that the school had become involved in the scheme: “What an interesting project this turned out to be. It was an unusual request - to think of names for roads! Our children were presented with this task and had great excitement coming up with interesting suggestions.
A large number of children took part and eventually the names put forward by Samuel and Mrs Sims were the winners. We all enjoyed the challenge and hope the residents like the names chosen.”
Gila Trevena, Affordable Housing Co-Ordinator for Penwith District Council, said: “Whenever I drive past this site, I remember all the dedicated work that turned this piece of land into a dream home for some of the keyworkers in Penwith, young local people and their families. I delight in the fact that by all partners pulling together, we achieved affordable homes for local people which has further enhanced the already vibrant community spirit.”
There was a surprise visitor as Santa Claus arrived at the opening with his sledge piled high with presents for the residents’ children.
