New club for Over 50's in Fowey

Ocean Housing and Age Concern in Cornwall launched a new drop in activities centre on Friday (28 November) at Windmill House in Fowey

Greta StifmanOcean offered Age Concern the use of the lounge at Windmill House and is delighted that this new social club is available for the over 50s in the local community, including the residents of their sheltered housing.

Jill McManus, who is Ocean’s Support Officer at Windmill House, said the residents are giving the venture their full support: “We are so pleased that the over 50s residents in Fowey can enjoy getting together in such lovely surroundings. There is a range of activities on offer, and we would love to hear from those who are interested . We would also welcome ideas and suggestions as to what people would like to do and see at the club. One gentleman resident mentioned pole dancing with a twinkle in his eye – but we won’t be taking that one up!”

Debby Browne, Centre Manager at Age Concern Cornwall, enthused: “We are really excited about this new project. Our aim is to bring those who are socially isolated in the county to centres where they can drop in and meet other people, enjoy activities, form friendships or even just have a cup of tea and a chin-wag.” The afternoon was very well attended and voted a huge success by all there. The residents and visitors sang along with entertainer Yan Peter and Barbara Howson got everyone moving with some exercise. Windmill resident Greta Stifman said: “I enjoyed it very much – especially the entertainment. It was also good to welcome visitors to Windmill House and we hope that they will come again. It is a great opportunity for residents like myself to meet new people, and with winter approaching people are always looking for different things to do. So don’t miss out – come and join in!”

Both Jill and Debby are adamant that the club will function on the ideas of those attending and will be their club, and they welcome suggestions as to the type of entertainment and activities that could be provided.

The drop-in club is open Fridays 2 – 4 pm. Anyone with transport difficulties can contact Jill McManus at Windmill House on 01726 833401.

Jill said: “The Lions Club and St John’s Ambulance can provide transport but please let us know as early as possible, as the driver is on voluntary basis.”
